The worth a bargain item.

My girlfriend purchased a set of computer speaker system to fulfill her quest to enjoy movies she loves. The price was around RM150 which for me is quite cheap for a decent quality speakers system. This was a year ago and she got a 1 year warranty for the system. I thought it was a great bargain since the system came from a distinguished brand. And yes we did enjoy couples of movies both DVD and downloaded. For about 7 months, it was working so well until it started making problems. Then the story begins.

The inexperienced and deceitful staff.

We went back to the shop to get the speakers for servicing and what they told us was surprisingly different from what they had promised her before. It was so amazing how they came up with so many ridiculous excuses. The first sales guy we met was told us that any the warranty for the speakers only valid for a short 6 months. We had a little arguments about that of course. Embarrassingly for the company, this poor inexperienced sales guy had no idea what he was talking about. He even asked who which salesman sold us the set which has nothing to do with it since we already have a proof of purchase. He kept on saying the warranty only valid for 6 months. He went up to his colleague showed him the the receipt only to come back with an even more ridiculous answer. He explained to us the name of the shop had been change so he can’t do anything. By then, my girlfriend had lost her patient and decided to leave. And so we left. It was a wrong move we made but I was not satisfied with how they treated as customers and my girlfriend had started yelling. Who wouldn’t?

When I came back to the store few weeks later, this time alone with the speakers. I went straight to one of their staff and showed him the receipt with a question “Is this receipt belongs to this company?”. He explained to me that the company name had been changed but they are still the same company who issued the receipt. I checked with him about the warranty and I got the same crappy “valid for 6 months only”. The truth was I have inspected the set and found a decal stating that the warranty validity is 1 year. As soon as he saw the decal he startled and I was already looking for the manager. I showed her the decal and she straight away instructed the staff to check on the set. That was great to finally get a proper response. So we checked the set and he agreed there was problem. There was however one more problem, there were out of stock. He offered me to leave the set there until they get a new stock and he will contact me when they have a replacement. I was asked to leave my contact info for them so they could inform me in 2 weeks time. This is where they started to give me doubts over their customer services. I was given only a piece of small blank paper and a pen to write in my name and my contacts. That was it, I asked them whether they have any proper forms which I could fill-in. And they said they don’t have any. I had a feeling that paper just going to end up in a dustbin. So I waited.

The no such customer here, bad excuses, bad customer retaining effort.

After 2 weeks of silence, my girlfriend asked me to give them a call instead. So I called and I was received nicely which is a great thing about Malaysian. I introduced myself, told them I came few weeks ago, and asked them about the speakers. So as I mentioned before, with only a piece of paper I wasn’t surprised if they had lost my details. They lady actually asked for my details AGAIN! Imagine that. As if I was experiencing deja vu they asked me which staff I checked the speakers with. Another thing was they told me they’ve been receiving a lot of defected items recently(are you telling me you are selling junks?) I was very frustrated with how they handle their customers. I’m going to see them for the last time next week for a last chance. I am hoping not to get the same crap or the manager will get a great review from me.

The atoll itself is surrounded by walls and steep drop offs to average of 40meters to 60meters before plunging down to as deep as 2000meters. Due to its location by deep water, the chance for sighting of pelagic species are high especially during March to June. The existence of the rights of passage among male species has so many variations around the globe. It all however turn into one conclusion, a prove of manhood. To gain the respect, trust, and place in the ‘elite’ society. In this modern age, most of the rituals had lost their attraction, most society no longer practice them. To most of our modern thinking youth, they look at the rituals as ancient, no longer practical and maybe humiliating for some.

On this post, I’m gonna write about an ancient ritual still practiced in Dantesque, Faeroe Island. Faeroe Island are islands group situated between the Norwegian Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, approximately halfway between Scotland and Iceland. It belongs to the Kingdom of Denmark.

What seems to be acceptable in the past however is now viewed as a cruelty globally. The 10th century aged of practice involves killing of whale or dolphin to initiate into adulthood. This is a mandatory! So anyone reaching their adolescence has to go through it. Nearly 1,000 pilot whales and calderon dolphins are killed annually in the “grindadráp” — whale hunt — during summer months.

On a different point of view, the death of the dolphins and whales have been part in the life of the Faeroe and the animals themselves. They look at this as a custom, a way to tell the stories of their ancestral to the younger generation. They took the meat for consumption as well. However, the way it is done gave me an uneasy feeling. The animals were trapped, brought to the shallow just to be stabbed and left to bleed to death. Hunting is probably much more acceptable terms it it applies here. As a rights of passage, it will not be acceptable by the world. It is far beyond basic needs. It is far from nutrient needs and is done in a very inhumane way, long painful death instead of painlessness. It is beyond justification of killing for survival. A prove of bravery against a weak and helpless animals does not fit into its purpose. The biggest problem I have was with the display of enjoyment the people show during the ritual watching young people torture animals in the name of bravery.

The truths are even worst, if the Faeroe are labeled as cruel, think about the killing of polar bears in Alaska for the sake of a trophy and a picture, think about thousands of bulls in Spain killed for human entertainment. Think about the Japanese method of killing dolphins.

“Japanese Fishermen often injure a few captives by spear thrust or knife slash to retain the group since dolphins never abandon injured family members. The water turns red and the air is filled with their agonising screams. They are then dragged to the slaughter place and their throats slashed and left to die. Dolphin meat are later marketed and often disguised as whale meat.”

I love foods. In fact I am a ‘Big Eater’ for a merely 168cm and 64kg. I enjoy food a lot where ever I go. I do eat late as well, sometimes of course. Last year, when I first started working as a dive guide in Layang-Layang Island Resort, I just could not resist the foods they served to us. Every single morning at 9am after the first dive ended, massive amount of breakfast were served. Lunches were no less extravagant than breakfast either. With all those desserts available, it was hard to resist. And so my afternoon were always filled with high calories. Then along came the evening tea, with all those tasty pastries with shots of caffeine it all became one perfect day for me. About 3 hours later, dinner arrives as usual. I’ll be stuffing myself with rice, meats, sometimes a plate of spaghetti, end it up with dessert(again) and complete the night with cold beers. This would kept on going for 6 months. Great way to live.

Now, if we look from a fitness and health expert’s point of view. I will not be surprised if they labeled me as suicidal the instance I tell them this fact. For a regular person who does not exercise and have the same amount of food consumption as I did, that person will face the risk of obesity and health complications. For someone who exercises everyday and eating the same way as I did, that person might have problem managing a healthy weight. In reality, I should be a 100kg by now. But I am still maintaining my weight around 62 to 65kg until now.

So how did I manage to not get bloated up? I had to confess that during the 6 months period I did put on weight up to 69kg, which was acceptable at least. What is the secret? There was no secret at all actually. I was just enjoying my food as usual. And practice a few methods as well.

My first experiment was an advised from a friend, Chris who is a workout freak. The advised was take a big amount of breakfast for a kick-off, medium sized lunch, less dinner combined with massive workout 3 times a week. I did as he suggested and it work well for a while. The only problem was I get really hungry after each workout. So I came back to big dinner again. And obviously it didn’t go really well for me. After that, I got suggestion about adjusting and controlling my diet. The truth is, I am not at all a big fan over dieting to lose weight. I do believe it plays a major role in weight management but if the diet means I have to cut down my food intake dramatically and follow certain restrictions, say goodbye to my favorite dessert, I lost interest instantly.Plus a calorie-restricted diet will cause starvation response to the body resulting it to restore as much fat as possible for later use.

I started running searches for suggestion from the web. The redundancy of weight loss diet program was overwhelming, the rest would be just a gimmick to get you to spend your money on. Then I ran into this topic. Calorie shifting. The explanation was really confusing. But with the assurance that I can still enjoy foods with this method enticed me to read more. In the end, it all came to one simple solution. Each meal needs to have different value of calorie each time. This way the body will have a unique reflex which generates metabolism it needs to burn fat all the time. So instead of creating a starvation response, you confused your body to keep on using up fat in an instance. Somehow I still find it too troublesome, I’d have to calculate the amount of calories in my meal each time. That’s not the way for me. This was the example,

Meal 1 = 200 calories

Meal 2 = 500 calories

Meal 3 = 100 calories

Meal 4 = 400 calories

After reading few more reviews I came up with an idea. Why not just have different amount of meals every time? It is easier and no math to be included. How about this

Plus at least 10 glasses of water a day, this is very important if you want to lose those extra. You can still enjoy sodas, coffees or juice in addition to this.

See, no numbers, same concept and easier. 4 meals a day with different portion each and cutting down on fatty food while skipping those fast food, my body started to burn fat even while sleeping. This however was only some part in the process. By combining this with short intensity exercise, the result was even better. Remember this is my own way and may not work the same way with everyone but it will show results. Get a proper guide if you have doubts please.

The conclusion is, stay with 4 meals a day and lots of water will improve the results. Be reasonable with your meal by taking more fibers and vegetables for the cleansing of your body system. Remember, never skip any meal especially breakfast. When you are hungry, your metabolism slows down as well. When you skip the breakfast, you will lose few hours of fat burning time as your metabolisms only kicks off on your first meal of the day. You only have 8 hours duration of normal active metabolism before it slows down again. Keep the cycle high with healthy food and you will keep burning fat even while sleeping.

The answer is 90 years old and this was from my true experience.

I know some won’t believe this until they see it for themselves. I couldn’t at first as well. And to spend 4 days of diving with a group of elderly(70 to 90yrs old) was not in my expectation at all.

It was somewhere around the month of April, the month which the resort always gets the highest occupancy in its 6 months operation(March to August). We are talking about 100 to 120 guests at the same day, which had made me to come up with this joke, ’someday scientists are going to blame scuba divers for the global rising of the sea level’. This is the month of high expectation, anticipation and excitement. It is also the month of desperation and frustration. 120 divers with the same passion. 120 divers with the same expectation. To see if they have all the luck they need to encounter one of the most amazing shark performing their ancient rituals. The hammerhead sharks parade, the aggregation of 30 to 40 mighty sharks gliding gracefully in the blue water. If any of the divers are lucky, as if seeing the school is not enough, one of these gentle giant might even come close by to inspect, close enough for you to see the shark’s details. On a different dive however, some might missed it by a mere second before they disappear into the depth. That dive will be a disappointing one so they said. To be exact, 70% of these divers admitted of being a ’single minded’ diver, their dive trip has only one goal, only the hammerhead that matters. Seeing other amazing life such as the majestic giant manta swimming close to divers for as long as 30minutes or a massive school of bigeye trevally crossing path with another 30 pygmy devil rays never seems to please them enough. I have never grew tired of such an amazing scene. Would you?

Back to my story, I was assigned to guide a group of Japanese for 4 days. There were 10 of them altogether. It was not a surprised of course as I was already informed about it few days in advanced. However, what surprised the day they arrived was to see 2 young Japanese guys with 8 elderly people slowly walking to the reception. When I get their registration form, things just gotten better. Their average age was 80years old. 1 of them(Ikuko) just celebrated her 90th birthday few weeks before, and she has only been diving for a year. In fact, most of were. I was so sure I’m going to need an extra guide until I saw the 2 guys’ forms. They were actually the dive instructors of the group and also the organizer of their trip. What a big relieved. They assured me they are going to assist me in any way which was very cool.

It was a very interesting week for me. The dives were fantastic. We saw one hammerhead shark right above us. We had a manta ray swimming along with us for 15 minutes. They were happy. And they were as active as a youth can be. Amazing people.It was tiresome as well. We always had to figure out the best way for them to enter the water as well as to exit which was the most challenging every time. The Japanese ways of giving services has always amazed me and these 2 instructors had displayed the same manners towards their group members. I was very lucky to have them helping me out. I have to give credit to my boat captain’s professional performance during those times.

3 dives a day, water was sometimes quite choppy, some of my elderly divers had finally decided it is too much for them. 3 of them had chose to do only 1 or 2 dives a day. Ikuko amazingly did 3 dives a day without fail. How amazing that was for a 90 years old lady. The fact that she was also the ‘cheer captain’ on the boat made things better for everyone. Nothing stops her from diving. Not the swell which had given seasick to most of them nor the merciless infamous current of Layang-Layang water. Some other divers were so curious they came up to me and asked me about my dives with them. There was another Japanese diver Mr.Honda who was our regular guest who said to me that he once thought he was the oldest diver on the resort until my group arrived. By the way Mr.Honda was 67years old at that time. And he comes every year to see the sharks, so we’ll be expecting him again next year.
