Diet soda as we all know are typically sugar-free, artificially sweetened, and non-alcoholic beverages. The general targeted market for diet soda are health-conscious people, people with diabetics and also athletes. They are also popularly marketed to people who wants lose weight and those who wants to maintain fitness.
But how can ’sugar-free’ drinks have sweet taste just like the other normal sodas? It’s the non-saccharide or non-sugar artificial sweetener such as sucralose (Market as Splenda) and acesulfame potassium (Sunnet or Ace K) used in the drink instead of sugar. As for the name of non-sugar beverage, it has been very popular among those who would prefer to consume less or zero calories beverages.
As for my main concern is, can diet soda be really effective in helping you to lose weight or keep your weight at healthy level? After seeking answers from the internet as well from health experts and my own experience, my answer is going to be a yes and a no.
As from my own experience- When I switched to diet soda, the reduced sugar and calorie each day helped me to lose some weight for a while. I would consume 2 to 4 cans of diet soda each day. After months of drinking diet soda, I started gaining weight once again. I found out that every time I have diet soda, I will always want to eat something with it. I also found out that when anything other than water hits your stomach, chances are you will get an up tick in the hunger response. I also tend to extra loose with diet thinking I am making up for it with the diet soda.
Yes- Diet soda is so much better to be consumed than sugar based regular soda. The easy principle is the less calories in a soda, the higher the chances for you to lose weight. It will greatly reduce your daily calories intake resulting the body to burn more stored fat for energy. Research discovered that an individuals who drink excessive amounts of regular soda will experience weight loss if they switch to diet soda.
No- An 8 year study showed that those who drink even 2 cans each day are 57% more likely to become overweight. Another research however suggested that diet soda might stimulates appetite due to the undelivered expected calories from diet soda to the body. It is also most likely to increase cravings for sugar flavored foods. Diet soda drinkers are also less likely to consume healthy food. The overuse of caffeine in most diet soda as well raised concerns as caffeine can increase level of insulin which can slow down the burning of stored fat in the body.
Bottom line is, diet soda drinking habit can be both good and bad for us. It all depends on your mindset. Moderation is always the best option to stay
However, trying to lose weight on a short-term solutions will usually magnify the problems more. I always believe that what you choose to eat, how you choose to live will affect your quest to get that healthy body.
